This fabulous film is based upon the short sage, “Travel Well, My Brother”, which appears in an anthology of short stories titled, “The Snow Walker”, written by Canadian icon, Farley Mowat. The legend takes area somewhere approach the Artic in 1953 and opens with a dusky figure traipsing slowly across a frozen wasteland. The film then flashes benefit to a time three months earlier in a settlement called “Yellow Knife”, located somewhere in the Northwest Territories of Canada. While making a routine delivery in a desolate set, he is met by a miniature family of Inuit with a seemingly tubercular daughter (Annabella Piugattuk) ) who clearly needs medical attention. They interrogate that Johnny grasp her to the hospital in Yellow Knife but Johnny refuses to do so. When they bribe him with some principal ivory tusks, he has a change of heart, taking the young woman on board. Unfortunately, the runt aircraft experiences technical difficulties, and they wreck in the frozen tundra, a couple of hundred miles from civilization, but are physically relatively unhurt by the break.

Thinking that he would do better on his occupy, Charlie divests himself of the young woman, leaving her with some supplies but believing that he is consigning her to her death. He is a young man with puny respect for the Inuit people. He simply does not gawk the value in their culture, which he does not understand, and marches off into the bleak wilderness on his beget. He, who is a whiz with machinery, has puny knowledge on how to survive in that bleak but aesthetic wasteland. Consequently, by the time he is about a week into his jog through this unforgiving tundra, he is overcome by nature and the vicissitudes of this harsh and alien environment. Fortunately for him, the young woman he left slow is far more resourceful than he is. She catches up with him, finding him on the brink of death, and nurses him abet to life, becoming the key to his survival.

It is only after all this happens that he bothers to learn that she is called Kanaalaq. Slowly, he learns to connect with this young woman in a blueprint that he has never connected with anyone. He learns to luxuriate in her, discovering that she is lovely both inside and out. Through his relationship with Kanaalaq, whom he begins to regard as a runt sister, he learns how to fancy another human being, becoming reborn as a better person in the process. He also learns to connect to the land and, in doing so, finds the strength to survive his ordeal. Kanaalaq ends up giving Charlie Halliday the gift of life.

What happens to Charlie and Kanaalaq, how they manage, and how their relationship develops is at the heart of this film. It is the fable of two cultures that near together and seamlessly mesh in order to survive out on the frozen tundra. It is an intensely enthralling and deeply personal film that is simply stunning. With a minimum of dialogue, this film sends out a major message.

Barry Pepper is terrific in the role of Charlie Halliday, a flawed human being who manages to overcome his shortcomings and become all the better for his ordeal. He infuses the character with a definite charisma, so that when his shortcomings become apparent, the viewer does not hate him but, rather, hopes that he will peruse the error of his ways and secure redemption. Newcomer Annabella Piugattuk is simply sensational, giving a well-nuanced and very touching performance in the role of the dying Inuit girl, Kanaalaq. Her role is central to the film, and she is a breakout star. They searched for six months, until they found her, having auditioned hundreds of young women in the process, as they were looking for someone indigenous to the place to contain the female lead. The casting director discovered her at a local teen dance in the Northwest Territories, and what a derive she is.

This Canadian production was the recipient of numerous Genie nominations, which are the Canadian equivalent of Academy Award nominations, and are conferred by the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television. I have to say that, in unusual years, I have been mightily impressed with the originality, quality, and sophistication of Canadian films. They are sometimes simply the best films to be found. This one is no exception. Deftly directed by Charles Martin Smith, who is also an actor, he fully understands the notion that less is oftentimes more and exacts grand performances from the entire cast. Moreover, he perfectly captures the majesty, beauty, and sheer bleakness of the landscape that acts as the backdrop for this resplendent account. Bravo!

The 2003 Canadian film is one of those independent films that I call a “gem”. It’s a simple epic. Station in 1953 in northern Canada, a bush pilot, played by Barry Pepper, agrees to hover a seriously ill young Inuit woman, who seems to have tuberculosis, to a town where she can glean medical attention. He’s reluctant to do this but her family bribes him with a pair of walrus tusks. Played by first-time actress Annabella Piugattuk, this Intuit woman is outstanding in her role, as she helps the pilot to survive after their plane crashes and also teaches him some vital lessons about life.

Yes, this is a hackneyed epic with no exact surprises. But under the expert hand of writer/director Charles Martin Smith, the film comes out better than the sum of its parts. I found myself completely drawn in and also learned a lot about survival in the frozen north. I applaud the director’s decision to spend an authentic Inuit actress in the main role which made the film seem accurate. It was well-paced with impartial enough tension to support me wondering what would happen next.

This is a elegant film and I definitely recommend it. And it is especially suited to sight during a summer heat spell.

Houseboat was the first movie I ever saw in a drive-in. Imagine seeing Cary Grant and Sophia Loren dancing to a Sam Cooke adore song on a mask the size of a football field. The wardrobe for the movie is dazzling. When did we halt taking the time to dazzle with matching hats, gloves, etc.? Positive beauty aside, what really impressed me was the award winning script. The explanation Cary Grant gives as a parent about death, and the kids dialogue and behavior rang good. The kids behaved like any children would when one parent dies, and an absentee parent appears to consume them from the good world of their grandparents. The kids were terrific in their roles. Cary Grant and Sophia Loren were worthy considering she had unbiased dumped him to marry her original husband. One wonders what would have happened if Cary and Sophia had really married. Would they have lived happily ever after like they did in Houseboat? Who knows. At least we can have that fantasy time and time again on DVD.

‘Houseboat’ is a throwback to the kind of sweet, contented comedies Cary Grant did in the unhurried ’40s-early ’50s, and it foreshadows the domestic comedies James Stewart and Henry Fonda would do in the sixties. Granted, there is more romance (and with Sophia Loren as the objection of affection, Cary has it all OVER Jimmy and Hank!) but ultimately, it scores as a terrific family movie, as Loren, playing an inept but adorable housekeeper/nanny, wins the affection of widower Grant’s kids, and awakens in him a more complete fancy than he was experiencing with his society girlfriend (played effectively by the handsome Martha Hyer) .

Living in a rundown houseboat to place on expenses, Grant and family lives had become a expressionless routine, until the arrival of Hurricane Loren, with her Italian philosophy, her singing, and her unmistakable femininity and sex appeal (which introduces oldest son Paul Peterson to the joys of puberty, and to daughter Mimi Gibson and younger son Charles Herbert a mother-figure they both needed) . Grant is at first oblivious to her charms, but she is hard to ignore for long! The interrogate then becomes, when will Cary ‘wake up’, and realize everything he needs is factual on the houseboat?

Filmed after Grant and Loren’s whirlwind affair during the filming of ‘The Pride and the Passion’, the film was a bittersweet experience for both stars, particularly shooting the wedding scene, as Grant aloof desperately wanted to marry Loren, but she had already decided to remain with longtime worship Carlo Ponti. Viewers aware of the ‘behind-the-scenes’ fable will devour the performances of the two leads even more!

I personally contain Chris Rock is the funniest comedian ever. I pick both Vol1 & Vol2 of “the Best of the Chris Rock Note”. The 2nd DVD deserves 4.5 out of 5 stars, without a doubt but the first volumne is pale in quality, length & utter.

This seems to fair be grabs of random pieces of his prove and are bar far NOT “the best off”. The 2nd volumne has 55mins of skits and then another 45mins of his “Taxi Cab Driver Confessions” which alone almost makes the disk worth the assume. This disk is impartial a abominable collection of skits from the explain, then 2 skits from the Taxi Cab. If you want a safe Chris Rock DVD, rob volumne 2, but pass this one up, its not worth it, not even with a less than (…) pricetag.

All in all, this video is ample — especially since we don’t have HBO in my apartment, so this is my only chance to peek Rock’s talk demonstrate work. However, I did miss the edginess of Rock’s standup social satire — for that, I would try one of his standup specials (which are, for my money, the best Chris Rock for the buck) . But if you’ve already memorized them all, and you’re looking for more laughs, try this astounding video.

Anyone who has seen “V” will want to scrutinize this sequel, as well. “V” was one of most modern made-for-television movie of its time. It spawned this sequel and its very gain television series. Mike Donovan (Marc Singer), a hunky cameraman, had his beget misgivings about the aliens, but once he observed the visitors literally shedding their skins, revealing that that they were not human at all, but rather, nothing more than reptilian looking aliens, his misgivings were reinforced. Mike also discovered that they meant mankind pain and were hell-bent of the conquest of Earth and divestiture of one of Earth’s most primary natural resources without which humans cannot live.

Mike joined the resistance, headed by gorgeous medical doctor, Julie Parish (Faye Grant) . As the underground resistance battled the visitors, many humans were unruffled convinced that the visitors were benevolent and being misjudged by these so-called freedom fighters. As fascist rule supplanted democratic government throughout the world, under the pretext of law and order and at the direction of the visitors and at the behest of their human puppets, the viewer cannot support but be aware of the allegorical implications.

This two disc DVD provides three episodic treats. The resistance continues its struggle against the visitors with the assistance of an alien fifth column, working secretly together, side by side. Mike Donovan and Julie Parish are now joined by evil and laconic Ham Tyler (Michael Ironside), a faded special forces agent with a chip on his shoulder and the military strategy indispensable to coalesce the resistance movement into a lean, mean, fighting machine.

This sequel mini-series is action packed, as the visitors and the resistance fighters duke it out for control over the Earth. The exquisitely graceful, outrageous alien, Diana (Jane Badler), stops at nothing to gather her ambitions. Not sing with being the science officer for the invading forces, she seeks military glory at all cost. She is the one from whom both humans and aliens have considerable to dread.

Sure, a daring and sweeping statement. Also, utterly apt. Television viewers of 1984 had never seen anything like V, and anyone who has seen it would agree that there’s been nothing made since to even remotely touch it in terms of sheer entertainment.

V: The Final Battle consisted of the last three 2-hour installments of the series, preceded by the first two installments of V aired the previous year. Aliens have finally arrived on Earth, looking like us and posing as friends to all mankind while their motherships waft menacingly over every major city of the world. But cameraman Mike Donovan infiltrates the Los Angeles mothership and makes an extraordinary discovery: the benevolent “Visitors” are actually reptiles in disguise, intent on harvesting all of the natural resources of the planet, which includes tapping us humans as a food source! Donovan joins up with a rag-tag resistance movement led by Julie Parish, and together they lead their fugitive band in the overthrow of alien tyranny.

Like any ample work of SF, V hits a lot of hot-button social issues, including abortion, inter-racial relationships and tolerance, and cultish brainwashing. And the allegory of the Visitor infiltration of our world to the rise of Naziism in 30’s Europe is hard to miss. Upright down to the Visitor insignia, a sort of high-tech update of the Swaztika, as well as scenes with truckloads of confused humans being transported in the middle of the night to Visitor “processing” plants. Joining with the social commentary is a fair and able cast, led by “Beastmaster” Marc Singer as the independant Donovan and Faye Grant as the tough yet fragile resistance leader Parish. Heading the Visitor invasion is Jane Badler as the catty Diana, along with thier supreme leader John, played by Richard Herd. These main players are surrounded by a fantastic supporting cast, all of whom are given time to be fleshed out into full-fledged characters you care about. In particular, Michael Ironside gives a knock-out performance as hardass “Ham” Tyler, an ex-CIA spook with miniature social grace but a lot of firepower. V is wonderfully well crafted, with its rousing action sequences, amazing-for-TV SFX, and surprisingly touching moments. And they really bound things up with two show-stopping sequences: Grant’s grand interrogation scenes, and the unforgettable “birth” sequence, a apt SF classic. Even the dodgy puppeteering can’t support me from the edge of my seat everytime I peep it.

But, this IS SF, and this IS TV, so we have some obligatory lapses in logic. Why do the visitors cease in thier human disguises even when out of human conception on their ships? Speaking of which, how does a thin layer of erroneous skin do such a convincing human appearance for these lizard-like menaces? And how, with thousands upon thousands of soldiers and 50 ships three miles across hovering over every major city, do the Visitors manage to retain losing to the rabble resisters? And is it unbiased me, or is the V:TFB music theme suspiciousy similar to that of “The Terminator”, also released this year? The reply, of course, is who cares?! Impartial delight in the trek and don’t ask so many questions, okay? Also, while the mini-series remarkably doesn’t feel too dated even 15-16 years after it was made, its pedigree occasionally pokes through. In particular, in V:TFB, the scene where Mike and Julie finally hook-up really stands out as a glaring section of early 80’s cheese.

In what has become a market of extremely lame disease/disaster-of-the-week TV movies, V was something really special: an tale SF event, lovingly crafted and with no expense spared. I accelerate to add that it was a defining moment for the generation that saw the rise of Pac-Man and Mario into accepted culture. The TV movies were followed that tumble by V: The Series, which struggled for a year and was finally cancelled. Modern broadcaster NBC has attempted to recapture the magic of V with a number of fantasy TV “events” in original years, including “Gulliver’s Travels”, “The Odyssey”, “Merlin” and “The 10th Kingdom”. If you bear the previous edition of Lock, Stock you might really want contemplate about if it is worth double-dipping. The transfer for this one is as superior if not slightly worse than the previous 2003 release. There are only two (puny) current extras on this edition. “One Smoking Camera” features the film’s cinematographer talking about how he shot the film. He takes us through a few key sequences and shows how they were shot or edited.

Finally, there is “Lock, Stock and Two F**king Barrels,” a montage of colourful insults and curse words ragged throughout the film by various cast members.

Why the extras on the helpful Plot 2 release weren’t ported over is a mystery and as a result this edition is really not worth your time.

Pulp Fiction fans should cherish this video, as it is quirkier, more tantalizing and funnier than Tarantino’s film. Few movies of the past decade even have a spot that makes sense, let alone one that is enthralling, but LS&2SB is not honest well plan out, edge-of-seat suspenseful, but it is downright clever.

Every single actor in this film does a radiant to sizable job of acting, each portrays an modern character and each is perfectly cast. While not a gut-buster, this is a subtle and sometimes not-so-subtle gloomy comedy.

Unlike most other comedies, the camera work in this movie is objective wonderful. The interspersed dreary motion and speeded-up filming of the departure from the card game (after one of the lead characters is swindled out of 500,000 pounds) captures a space of disbelief and sickening depression better than practically any other portrayal of emotion I can bewitch from any film.

This movie contains a lot of violence, but it is done tastefully and in a microscopic fashion. The camera usually pans away from the actually violent parts, leaving the worst to our imaginations (or not, as we each inspect fit) . This is a qualified incompatibility with films like Casino, that contained revolting, sickening quantities of senseless violence.

Finally, the music accompanying this film is suited. Out of the perhaps several thousand movies I have seen or rented in the past two decades, this was the first soundtrack since Animal House that I purchased and it is a very strong collection of former and unusual tunes that really added a lot to the atmosphere.

If you’ve ever went camping or trekking and sat around the camp with time on your hands, the Dr. B’s soap bottle is challenging read. Until I watched this DVD, didn’t know what was the motivation tedious those words. This is a fable from the long line of genius/eccentrics incorrect for lunatics, and how the lucky elope brought about a big determined for the world–a cohesive philosophy, product, and company in the best sense of the environmental movement. The anecdote leisurely the father-sons relationship is very touching, and effectively humanizes (humorously in some parts, to boot) this film. The word plan that came to my mind as I watched Dr. B spoke: metaphysical -kinetic.

This is an recent documentary. It holds your attention radiant well for the first 45 minutes. Round that 45 slight ticket (halfway) and all of a sudden there’s a ton of repitition. I got very tired of hearing Dr. Bronner reveal the True ABC’s and One God For All phrase.

Now, I wish that Amazon had some ability to format reviews, because this review deserves to be in a lustrous blue block with white type and at 7 point. How fun would that be to read?

So, if you have conventional the Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soap – the pepermint or lavendar castile soap – and, like me, spent an hour in the bathtub reading that white 7 point type on a blue background; you must be dying to know more about this mythical Dr. Bronner and his company. Well you are overly served with this documentary. The director, Sara Lamm, did a astounding job of capturing the genius / insanity unhurried the corporation. She is clearly in alarm of what the Bronner’s have accomplished.

My complaint about this film, the account line is horribly disjointed. There doesn’t seem to be a begining and an end; it unprejudiced sort of wanders all over Dr. Bronner’s life; tossing in childhood one moment, grandchildren the next, adulthood next, and then children another. After watching this film, I’m hard pressed to snarl you Dr. Bronner’s life history.

The tremendous piece about this film – this is a company that genuinely cares about doing the fair thing, which translated into success. The Bronner company does some exquisite things – rapid forward to the last chapter of the DVD, 4 minutes left. The things they do is noteworthy (70% of score profits are given to charity; no executive of the company makes more than 5 times the salary of the lowest paid vested worker) – now that’s putting your money where your mouth is. The DVD bonus feature, an interview with one of the grandsons 2 years after the filming is astonishing. Bottom line, this company was doing things many years ago that are unprejudiced now seen as distinguished.

The peculiar thing about this film, it’s not a very well-behaved film or documentary. It’s almost as if a fanboy was star struck by the company and wanted to form something that holds it scheme up on high. Bronner was a zealout that ignored his family for a higher cause. We hear that, its told to us; but it isn’t explored very deeply. The children, especially Ralph, exercise a lot of time on camera nattering on about not remarkable. The grandchildren were the really knowing ones, and should have been on camera distinguished more. At one point a woman named Gladys is interviewed and talks about some uncommon things. Later on, we acquire out that was Dr. Bronner’s 4th wife. Out of the blue, no context, no what happened to number 2, and 3 (we know number 1 died shortly after the children were born)? And then Gladys joins the nattering about not a lot.

I esteem the company. I treasure the product. I admire what it stands for (work hard and you will fetch a delicate wage) . I’m not such a mammoth fan of the One God For All belief, but even there, he has the accurate thought – everyone united to a approved cause of making the planet spaceship better. I’m clear that Sara Lamm meant well in making this documentary. Sorry, she unbiased got the film and legend telling side of things a lot off.

An hour and 28 minutes long, jump the last 6 chapters and 1 hour is unbiased moral. The movie is not rated, and is PG, actually probably more like G rated. There’s no strong language, no violence, no nudity, no sensual moments simulated or otherwise, and no subversive ideas (I’m impartial now watching This Film Is Not Yet Rated) . Oh I guess there is a 20 second moment where a woman talks about using the soap for an enema and female cleansing, in mostly those terms. Ah, and lest I forget, Ralph meets up with a long haired piano player that invites him to his room to play some music and smoke an *herbal* cigarette (they aged the trusty terminology) and discuss the utilize of herbs. But nobody ever does any of those things. But according to our glorious friend the MPAA, this film would have probably gotten an R rating for that one exchange about drug consume.

The DVD includes a couple of bonus features. The interview with one of the grandchildren is a must recognize, 17 minutes.

Worth watching if you’ve read the notice.

The 1982 low-budget outré comedy EATING RAOUL from writer/director Paul Bartel, who also stars, is an outrageously funny satire that needles such diverse elements of American culture as the concept of The American Dream, high-society status symbols, overzealous capitalism, racial stereotyping, and sexually deviant subgroups.

Paul and Mary Bland (Bartel and Mary Woronov) are a conservative, happily married middle-class couple who share an interest in fine wine, good food, and sexual repression. They also share entrepreneurial dreams of opening their own restaurant for epicures. Unfortunately, the Blands are flat broke. Paul is an unemployed wine connoisseur, and Mary only makes a pittance working as a Nurse’s Aide. To make matters worse, the building they want to purchase for their restaurant has also caught the eye of another buyer, so if Paul and Mary don’t raise the $20,000 down quickly, they’ll watch their hopes and dreams turn to dust.

Things actually take a turn for the better one evening when a “swinger” mistakes their apartment for the location of a wife-swapping party and elbows his way inside. Assuming that Paul and Mary are the party’s hosts, the horny gent tries to put the make on Mary, and in a passionate, knee-jerk response, Paul beans the guy with a frying pan and kills him. Examining the body, the two discover hundreds of dollars in cash. Surmising that all swingers must carry large sums of money, Paul and Mary employ the personal ads to lure horny men to their apartment, after which they off ‘em, take their money, then dispose of the bodies in their apartment building’s communal trash compactor. Now their dream finally seems to be within their grasp.

Enter the titular Raoul (Robert Beltran, later a regular on TV’s STAR TREK: VOYAGER). A two-bit con artist and thief, Raoul stumbles upon the Blands’ murder-for-money scheme and demands a piece of the action. Oddly, he doesn’t want any of the victims’ money; he only wants the cadavers. It seems he knows where he can sell ‘em, and he makes so much from each sale, in fact, that he offers to share HIS earnings with the Blands.

At first, the arrangement with Raoul works well, and the Blands are pretty close to having that down payment. But when Raoul decides that he also wants a share of MARY, it’s up to Paul to devise a way to remove the small-time grifter from the picture without losing his wife or endangering their culinary aspirations.

Robert Beltran, in the eponymous role, marks his first major film appearance with EATING RAOUL. Although his part is obviously a satirical caricature of Anglo misperceptions and misconceptions about Hispanic and Latin folks, Beltran creates a remarkable portrait of the sleazy, opportunistic Raoul and avoids delivering a mere parody.

Pretty, quirky Mary Woronov–once a favorite of artist/filmmaker Andy Warhol during the 1960s–is a pure delight in the role of Mary Bland. She portrays Mary with just the right mix of restraint and flakiness, being very careful not to take the character too far over the top and risk losing audience sympathy. While not curvaceous or large-bosomed like the stereotypical porn queen, Woronov has a subtle, natural sexuality that makes her few nude scenes in EATING RAOUL very sensuous and erotic. Heterosexual male viewers have no problem understanding why all the men in the film desire Mary.

Writer/director Paul Bartel is perfect as the pitiful, lethargic pseudo-intellectual Paul Bland. One would never expect a wimp like Paul Bland to murder somebody, not even in defense of his wife, which makes it all the funnier when Paul develops an indignant pugnacity and DOES start whacking the victims. A talented comic thespian, Bartel pulls this all off with a straight face and avoids pushing it to the point of camp.

In addition to the wonderful performances of the three principals, there are also some notable cameo appearances. Comedy writer Buck Henry–known to most viewers as a writer/co-creator of TV’s classic sitcom GET SMART–appears as a slimy bank officer appropriately named Mr. Leech. Ed Begley, Jr., shows up as a wannabe hippie; improv great Edie McClurg can be seen hamming it up at a wife-swapping party; prolific character actor Allan Rich has a bit as a gent with a Nazi fetish; and director John Landis makes a very brief (and uncredited) appearance at a sex party.

Yes, EATING RAOUL jumps back and forth across the line that divides mainstream comedy from avant-garde satire, especially by the standards of the era in which it was originally released. But it’s difficult to dislike this sardonic, satirical, low-budget dark comedy. In spite of the Blands’ murderous exploitation of unwary members of the “swinging” subculture, viewers tend to identify with the couple and feel an inexplicable desire to see them realize their epicurial dream. And this emotional ambivalence seems to make the film all the more humorous and enjoyable. In a way, perhaps, it’s even cathartic.

The Columbia/Tri-Star DVD release of this delightful satire is a bit disappointing. Though offered in an anamorphic widescreen format, the digital transfer has many noticeable flaws. There are a few times when the image warbles or shakes (especially perceptible on a sizable HDTV monitor), and throughout the movie there are spots where the image seems excessively blurry. There are also numerous scratches, hairs, and filmic artifacts. Considering that EATING RAOUL has attained the status of cult classic, the flick deserves a higher-quality DVD release. Also, it would’ve been nice if the disc had included some bonus material, like maybe a commentary track featuring Mary Woronov and Robert Beltran.

The bottom line: The film EATING RAOUL deserves 5 stars; the DVD treatment only 3. The 4-star rating, then, is the average of the two. Longtime fans of the flick will want a copy for their DVD collections, as the disc IS better than the previously released VHS versions. But uninitiated viewers should wait for a higher-quality DVD release.

This long awaited DVD is an incredible disappointment. The major problem that makes this unwatchable is that somehow this movie has been stretched horizontally to fit a widescreen TV. The result makes everything look distorted. I don’t know what the original aspect ratio was but this presentation is an abomination. I tried running it on my computer software to manually adjust the picture dimensions. The film does appear to be wider than the standard screen size but not the ratio as presented on this DVD.

And to top it off the print appears to be something of the VHS quality (i.e. poor) with color and resolution deficiences. There appears to be a gash in the screen as if the video was shot from a movie screen with a tear in the top middle. The sound appears to have been mono that someone has doctored up by added fake stereo and reverb, then steering the dialog from side to side. Warning: Listening to this may cause sea sickness.

Sony should be sued for selling this junk. I probably will be returning my copy. One thing for sure: if you are unable to manually adjust the aspect ratio with a computer, do not buy this. I will be anxiously waiting for this to be remastered – this is a good and funny film.

Both my toddler and I loved this video. For my toddler, it has several advantages: one, it’s an hour long and can replace Sesame Street itself if you missed it that day (objective derive an Elmo’s World tape to follow up) . Two, it has a beefy cast that includes the newer characters who weren’t around in my day: Elmo, Telly, Prairie Dawn and many others gain an appearance. Third, the celebrity cameos are few and abet the storyline well.

As a musty puppeteer and avid Sesame Street fan, I really enjoyed watching it myself. It has frail clips that have almost disappeared: the recent “Rubber Ducky” with the floating bubbles, “C is for Cookie,” “I’m an Aardvark, and I’m proud,” and some of the letter and number clips you might remember as a kid. I also liked that the storyline was filmed outdoors, making the production values somewhat better than other Sesame Street videos. Having a store of all the “indispensable” songs is really useful, too.

Enjoy this video with your kids – and drawl them about the “olden days” when Snuffy was an imaginary friend of Gigantic Bird’s and Ernie grew critters – what were those things called? – in his window box.

Watching this video is very similar to watching an episode of Sesame Street on PBS…only not exactly the same Sesame Street that’s on the airwaves today. It has musical clips from various episodes throughout the lifespan of Sesame Street and contains more clips of Bert & Ernie and Grover than you will notice in a typical episode in 2001.

It’s not objective a series of conventional clips, however. The clips and novel material are woven into a legend of Immense Bird looking for LaLa-ers for the note that the Sesame Street characters are planning. Not everything fits unbiased apt, but it is fun to scrutinize and say and dance to.

The most primary reason for my high recommendation of this video is the fact that my 22-month-old son is FACINATED by it. It may not be teaching him his numbers or his alphabet, but he is starting to try to vow along.

Not the absolute Best Video out there, but thoroughly toothsome and worth the stamp.

This is another great DVD of Dragon Ball Z, entering the third chapter of The Frieza Saga. For those that have been following DBZ on DVD for the last 60+ episodes, you’ll be excited to know that on this disc the action-packed epic 30 episode long battle with Frieza finally begins. While the dubbed English voices are still really cheesy, (most likely because Funimation is now handling the dubbing, rather than Pioneer, that handled it on the first 17 volumes), thankfully you can watch the original Japanese version with english subtitles. I noticed major differences in the dialogue between the two versions is different – nothing major – the main points are still made, but sometimes scenes in English look a little awkward with the made-for-american-TV dialogue. This is still lots of fun, thought – and addicting as ever!

Once Frieza has arrived on the scene, everything goes nuts. In “Fighting Power One Million” Frieza reveals the death of Vegita’s father and Planet Namek. And to celebrate this reminising, he transforms into a giant. In “Gohan’s Attack” Frieza attacks Krillin for the worst. Stabbing him in the stomach with his horn and throwing him into the lake. This leaves Gohan furious and he launches an all out assault against Frieza. Thanks to Dende, Krillin is ok, but Gohan is now the one in jeopardy. In “Piccolo The Super Namek” Krillin must lure Frieza away from Gohan until Piccolo arrives. One Piccolo arrives, things get ugly. In “Deja Vu” Frieza and Piccolo go one on one in an all out grudge match. Piccolo also reveals his new power after having fused with Nail.

The menus have really improved with nice music and fair graphics. Still, I wish FUNimation could include a different kind of extra instead of previews. The menu is basically inside a Capsule Corp ship. The video quality is much, MUCH improved over the last discs. You get the original opening and closings, but their textless, so don’t expect to see the original Japanese voice cast. I thought Frieza in his second form sounded like Principal Kuno from Ranma 1\2. If you have to buy one DBZ disc, make sure it’s this one. You won’t regret it.

A truly touching film about 6 friends (not exactly Friends), this independant from 1992 film won my heart. With a luminous opening scene, and the credits traveling from the last time they were all together in 1982 (with political wreck throughs and well-known people littering the screne space to the enormous Tears for Fears tune “Everybody Wants to Rule the World”) and a knowing anecdote line, Peter’s Friends is once of the best independant films out there. Directed and acted by the huge British Kenneth Branaugh with Emma Thompson, Hugh Laurie, Stephen Fry as Peter, and Imelda Staunton, it’s no wonder this is such a terrific flick.

Set on Recent Year’s Eve, 1992, each person comes to Peter’s estate for one last unusual years in his house, since Peter’s father died. It has been 10 years since they had all been together, performing a microscopic cabaret explain to anyone who would actually want them there to form. Now, all the friends have been married, movied away, or in destructive (or no) relationships. During the course of the weekend, they all rediscover one another as well as look who they are. With an pwerful script, setting, and cast of characters, Peter’s Friends is one of the best. I completely recommend you search for it and indulge in yourselves. It’s intelligent, so have fun!!!

I was totally appalled to read some of the negative reviews of this marvellous movie. I abominate to say this, but it helps to be British to understand and be pleased the clever, speedy humour, and to be able to report to this group of college chums — all of whom, I might add, were perfectly cast in their roles. You could go to any stately home in Britain today and accept an identical assortment of friends behaving in exactly the same intention. As we are fond of saying in England, it was “plot on” — wonderfully silly,poignant,yet excrutiatingly sunless at the raze. Oh, and the background music was terrific!
