This is a cheaply put-together re-release of shorts mostly from other DISNEY TREASURES TIN releases.

1) PRINCE AND THE PAUPER (1990) also on the Micky Mouse In Living Color Volume #2 TIN DVD release. That version is widescreen, this presentation is CROPPED.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Disney’s Timeless Tales, Vol. 1 – The Prince and the Pauper/Three Little Pigs/The Tortoise and the Hare! Click Here

2) THREE Dinky PIGS (1933) also on the “Disney Treasures: Comical Symphonies” DVD release.

3) TORTOISE AND THE HARE (1935) also on the “Disney Treasures: Comic Symphonies” DVD release.

4) THE GRASSHOPPER AND THE ANTS (1934) also on the “Disney Treasures: Droll Symphonies” DVD release.

5) THE PIED PIPER (1933) also on the “Disney Treasures: Funny Symphonies volume 2″ DVD release.

With the TIN DVD releases on diminutive availability, I guess Disney hopes those who missed out will capture these 5-cartoon discs. The outrageous stamp is misleading, when you atomize it down to individual cartoon cost this release is EXPENSIVE!

And no extras!

I bought this for my 3yr old-fashioned twins, and from the first showing, I kept hearing giggling and laughing as they watched the cartoons. My girls already are familiar with some fairy tales, so they really loved “The Three Tiny Pigs” and “The Pied Piper”. I highly recommend this DVD and believe it is a big acquire for parents with young children.

At long last a documentary that details the war relate of a tall American, this video is required viewing for all Audie Murphy fans. If there is a drawback, it skims too hastily over his film career. However, those enthusiastic in Audie’s life slow the scenes in Hollywood should read A THINKER’S DAMN: AUDIE MURPHY, VIETNAM, AND THE MAKING OF THE Smooth AMERICAN. It provides current insights into the character of this grand hero and how Hollywood treated him.

My husband is a vast Audie Murphy fan and watches his movies continuously (like to drive me crazy sometimes!) . He had a lot of knowlegde of Mr. Murphy of both his movie and military career and so I conception this would be a colossal gift to add to his collection. The movie is based mostly on Mr. Murphys valiant military career. He loved it. Im obvious we will look it over and over again!:-) :-(

That’s moral! 1939 is considered the greatest year of Hollywood films. Gone With The Wind (color), The Wizard of Oz (color), Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, Stagecoach, Wuthering Heights and The Hunchback of Notre Dame to name a few.

With this competition and a awe theme “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” was lost in the run.

In summary this masterful movie has been digitally restored and placed on DVD for apt recount & sound. Victor Hugo’s “Hunchback” was perfectly cast with Charles Laughton as Quasimodo the deaf & disfigured bell ringer of Notre Dame. The glowing Maureen O’Hara (US debut at 19) as the gypsy girl, Esmeralda. The villian Frollo (the Chief Justice of Paris) played expertly by Sir Cedric Hardwicke. The epic, the sets and castings chemistry rival any of the before mentioned films of 1939.

To delight in Hollywood’s Golden Age and the acting talent which was at its Paramount seek and bask in this greatest film Classic of Victor Hugo’s “The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1939) “.

Even granting my dispute lack of objectivity in evaluating this Hunchback after luminous it for 45 years (during which I must have seen it cessation to 50 times, including two viewings in the past two weeks), it remains luminous in every respect. Laughton’s performance remains unmatched and the gold standard for Quasimodo interpreters. The 19-year-old Maureen O’Hara is as current and sparkling and humane as in my earliest recollections. Sir Cedric Hardwick (an wonderful handle for the Jean Frollo character, no? ) is a perfect, pinched-nostril’d villain. RKO’s production values are second to none, and Joseph August’s photography (coupled to Dieterle’s film sensibility and scene framing, so touched by German cinematic impressionism) is absolute perfection. So too is the heralded Alfred Newman obtain, perhaps the finest marriage of musical phrase to filmed sequence to that point in film history–swellingly Wagnerian at emotional highpoints, but lean, linear, and distinctly 15th-16th century when period atmosphere is called for (listen for Tielmann Susato and other renaissance masters, skillfully woven in) .

But, in the ruin, it’s Laughton and Paris and the brilliantly recreated cathedral that stand at the picture’s center. Unspeakably glorious and, in the raze, unbearably heartbreaking.

The DVD transfer, however, is something of a disappointment–only three stars for its quality, particularly in the first reel. But don’t regain me wrong–it’s more than simply “watchable” and looks as estimable as anything else from the period you you might accelerate across on TCM; it improves from the picture’s middle third on, and the sound is heavenly. The DVD extras are extremely primary for recounting many production details; indeed, what I had always concept to be spectacularly wrought matte shots were, I learned in the included production documentary, a 5-acre recreation of 15th century Paris, designed from traditional woodcuts and drawings. (The otherwise delicate documentary sadly omits all mention of cinematographer August, who shot a number of pictures–Gunga Din, They Were Expendable, The Informer, The Devil and Daniel Webster–that are as often remembered for their distinctive “watch” and as for their “film classic” plot.) And the Maureen O’Hara interview, for those of us who grew up smitten with her, is a sheer delight–more than a half-century later and as flashing and shapely as ever.

Film buffs fabricate a gargantuan to-do over 1939 as “Hollywood’s Greatest Year.” Everyone else will agree once they gather a load of the filmography of 1939 that’s included here as an extra. It’s unbiased a list, but what a list.

Permesso…a biographical aside: Dieterle’s Hunchback, which holds a special position in my heart for a variety of reasons, but especially because it led directly to twin additions: to books, and to movies. As a microscopic boy, my esteem for this chronicle record naturally led me to read my first adult “chapter book”–a 35 cent Bantam translation of the Hugo unique. I’ve been book-addicted ever since, transposing my library browsing to the adult stacks and leapfrogging the entire body of classic juvenile literature that I eventually hurt up reading to my fill children. And movie-addicted, too–also as a boy, I hunted down the Lon Chaney Hunchback in a NYC repertory film house, saw the (sinful) Tony Quinn version in the theater, and since have seen, I say, every subsequent remake. And I also saw almost all of those amazing 1939 pictures, mostly on Million Dollar Movie, the ragged NY WOR program that showed a movie about 16 times a week (twice a week day and three times a day on weekends) .

Generally, a movie held as dearly in memory as I have held this simply cannot doesn’t withhold its recalled impact on re-viewing–it may seem dated, or trite, or visually uncompelling, emotionally vapid, saccharine, etc., to a contemporary film lover. But the Dieterle/Laughton Hunchback remains an well-known film, here presented in an outstanding package, and at a bargain trace.

My sister and I like this mini-series which was shown in Masterpiece Theater many years ago. Anyone who enjoys turn-of-the-century films such as The Age of Innocence, House of Mirth, The Golden Bowl, A Room With A Notion and Howard’s Destroy or stories of the Astors and Vanderbilts will gain themselves enraptured with this yarn of 4 glorious American women who pick up themselves being courted by sons of the British nobility.

In the center of the sage are Nan (Carla Gugino) and Virginia St. George (Alison Eliott), and their friends Conchita Closson (Mira Sorvino) and Lizzy Elmsworth (Rya Kihlstedt) – four young women living in turn-of-the-century America, when social position and wealth were the most vital considerations in a woman’s life (these were the days of the Astors and Vanderbilts, after all) . Early in the epic we regain Conchita married to Lord Marable and begins her fresh life with the English nobility. Spurned in Newport and Modern York social circles because they are considered “modern money,” Nan, Virginia and Lizzy fade to England to visit Conchita and hopefully try their luck there. With the relieve of 2 enterprising older women, they soon become the toast of the town and are courted by many comely, wealthy young men. Virginia and Lizzy vie for the attentions of Lord Seadown (Ticket Tandy) who is not quite what he seems. Nan is pursued by the humble but ambitious Guy Thwaite (Greg Wise from “Sense and Sensibility”) and the wealthy and reserved Julius, the Duke of Trevenick (James Frain) .

The mini-series offers sparkling scenery and costumes, mammoth acting from members of the cast (including veterans Cherie Lunghi, Jenny Agutter, Michael Kitchen and Rosemary Leach) and a thoroughly lively narrative. I loved the extraordinary mansions, palaces and castles in Newport and England alike and the astonishing intertwining of the American and British sensibilities in the region. It has “one foot in America and another foot in England,” as Masterpiece Theater narrator Russell Baker aptly explains. I highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys grand romance/drama!

This is a version of Edith Wharton’s last unfinished unique as completed by the BBC screenwriter Maggie Wadey. It was filmed barely 2 years after the first complete version of the fresh was published in 1993 (Completed by Marion Mainwaring) . It chronicles a very different time (1870s) when class distinctions were clearly marked and the nouveau riche found themselves curtly excluded from the “archaic money” aristocracy of 19th century America. The memoir traces the lives of 4 girls from such families who finding themselves rejected in the land of their birth, depart to England to try their charms and modern found wealth on the titled aristocracy of the customary country. How they fare and the breaking of their illusions compose the meat of the myth. One reviewer commented on the shallowness and blandness of the characters, of not being able to enlighten the girls apart. Some viewers may even ogle at these girls as twittering airheads. This is in piece Wharton’s doing. Edith Wharton was no admirer of the American upper class. She belonged to it, she experienced it first hand and she despised it and made it evident in her books. Wharton constantly pointed out her society’s ignorance, provincialism and prissy narrow-mindedness. None of the girls here really ends up living happily ever after. One of the reviewers here stated that in the absence of Wharton’s contain ending, the BBC screenwriter has let one of the girls off at the slay. But I tend to disagree. Even the heroine Annabelle’s running away with the man she loves (supposedly a glad ending) is tinged with the public scandal of adultery, the loss of her titles and privileges, and exile to the other side of the world (Durban, South Africa) . This is definitely not what any of the girls would have wanted. Everybody unprejudiced ends up making compromises and settling for second best. But then such is life.

As usual with the BBC, this is a radiant production, with pleasing costumes and sets, filmed at various locations in the English countryside as well as in Newport, Rhode Island which stands in for 19th century America.

The DVD transfer is a rather more questionable affair. According to IMDb, Buccaneers was shot on 16mm film. In America, most TV shows are shot on standard 35mm, 16mm film being primitive usually for cheaper productions, especially sitcoms and series whose future is in doubt. The BBC alas is publicly funded and doesn’t have quite the deep pockets of competing American studios, so many of even its major productions are on 16mm. The critically acclaimed “Brideshead Revisited” immediately springs to mind. For a 16mm film, this actually looks resplendent gracious with strong, vibrant colours, rich blacks and unprejudiced a dinky amount of graininess which imparts a distinct softness to the represent, powerful what you would seek information from from a 16mm print. It actually looks better than “Brideshead” does on DVD. What is disturbing is the rather uncommon (1.50:1) aspect ratio presented here. (Yes, I actually popped it into the PC to measure it.) Buccaneers is, I absorb, supposed to be in 1.66:1 widescreen. The 1.50:1 aspect ratio means that it has either been cropped or it has had its mattes removed. Either intention, it has been modified. Because of the unusual ratio it has to be letterboxed into a 4:3 frame. It may matter only to a handful of cinephiles or videophiles but I do wish video companies would remove more care in transferring their shows onto discs. Sound is in 2.0 Stereo and dialogue is always determined and determined.

I thoroughly enjoyed this movie, though I could easily imagine while many would not. It follows very considerable in the footsteps of other major release but out-of-the-mainstream films such as BEING JOHN MALKOVICH, IGGY GOES DOWN, THE ROYAL TENNEBAUMS, and ADAPTATION. Anyone who enjoyed all or any of those films is very likely to like this one as well. Anyone who was establish off by any or all of those films is unlikely to like I (HEART) HUCKABEES.

I don’t want to provide any details about the myth, since I have that this is a film best enjoyed in a status of relative ignorance as to its plotline. Grand of the joy in seeing the film for me was in its constantly surprising me with each twist the anecdote took. I loved having no thought whither or where the myth would lead, or even if it would earn resolution in the raze. It did, but it might not have been resolved in a fashion that would please every viewer. Without giving away any position details, I can say that distinguished of has the familiar feel of those undergraduate days spent contemplating existential philosophy. The ghost of Jean-Paul Sartre haunts the script.

As curious as the script is, it is noteworthy that the producers were able to attract such an incredible array of first rate actors. Though a collection of stars, it is in fact a big ensemble cast, and all of the performers apparently yelp to be share of an interconnected group. Dustin Hoffman and Lily Tomlin (I wonder if anyone else gets the impression that she has been virtually the same age for forty years) play a married couple who are also professional colleagues in a very recent detective agency. Jason Schwartzman plays a young environmentalist who becomes their client. Jude Law is an executive with the Huckabees of the film’s title (and who wears the same medium blue suit throughout the film) . Naomi Watts plays his girlfriend (and official narrate of Huckabees) and who is astonishingly sparkling throughout the film, whether adorned in clothing that inevitably resembles a bikini or in baggy overalls and Amish bonnet. Stamp Wahlberg probably cannot be made less delicate than he is in this film, though it is also one of his more consuming roles, as a fireman who is like Schwartzman a client of Hoffman and Tomlin. The wonderful Isabelle Huppert, whose appearances in English language films have been tragically rare, provides a Continental presence as the author of a book that Hoffman and Tomlin study as threatening to their activities.

Buy,Download, Or Stream I Heart Huckabees! Click Here

Between the highly modern and difficult-to-anticipate script, the honorable direction, and the generous ensemble cast, I found this to be an utterly delectable film. I hesitate, however, in giving it a blanket recommendation. While I loved its quirkiness, many more conservative filmgoers could get it a bit too adventurous. I show what I first said about this film: if you enjoyed the films mentioned in the first paragraph, you are likely to appreciate this one, but if you found this terrible or simply too unique, you might want to avoid this one.

“I Heart Huckabees” is the ultimate fancy it / disapprove it movie. Few will say, “I could either go search for ‘I Heart Huckabees’ or whatever else is playing at the multiplex.”

Me? I loved “I Heart Huckabees.” I loved it so powerful I can’t even review it. I loved every performance, every line of dialogue; I loved it so grand I want to originate a club with others who loved this movie … Normally, I can’t stand Jason Schwartzman, and even he didn’t raze it for me.

How can you vow which camp you’ll drop into? Here’s a test. Agree or Disagree with the following statements:

1.) My friends and family grunt me I assume too grand, and that my life would be great easier if I would unbiased relax and not rock the boat.

2.) I’ve tried meditation, but gotten sidetracked when I found myself imagining taking a machete to people who annoy me.

3.) I could prefer Franz Kafka out of a line-up that included Jean Paul Satre, Simone de Beauvoir, and Buster Keaton.

4.) The concept of sex with a nihilist leaves me contemplating nothingness, and yet strangely enraged.

5.) I’ve always wanted to scrutinize Marky Brand bicycle in fireman’s knee-high rubber boots, while protesting the world petroleum crisis.

6.) I once lost a girlfriend / boyfriend to someone who was cover-model resplendent / sparkling, but had no soul, and that, yet again, caused me to consider too mighty, and then to meditate, and then to imagine the whole machete thing.

7.) I contemplate that the objectification of women is shallow and uncouth, and Amish bonnets turn me on.

8.) Dustin Hoffman does a faux excellent, “I’ve got your nuts in my cracker” smile better and better as he ages.

9.) Lily Tomlin is reason enough to observe any movie.

10.) Cruely, Manipulation, Meaninglessness.

Give yourself as many points as you want for each “yes” respond, and then give yourself an equal number of points for each “no” acknowledge. Cause, you know? It’s all one.

As a history minor in college and one who has remained very alive to in the field, I have occasionally read material about Eleanor Roosevelt. However, it was always on the periphery of my main interests, so I had no conception what I was missing until I saw this tape. She was one of the most dynamic and influential people that this country has produced. Having had a dismal childhood, where even her mother commented that she was horrid, she seemed destined to hold up a life as a dutiful wife to a successful husband. However, and fortunately, that was not to be as she found herself and began a life of activism that made her enemies, but also made her the most remarkable woman of the first half of the twentieth century. In many ways, she was the perfect counter to her husband, as she could go out and purchase the heat for actions that FDR simply could not do.

In this tape, stocked with newsreel footage, photographs and interviews with relatives and family friends, you learn worthy about what drove her to succeed. As seems so celebrated, it was partly due to deep-seated feelings of early inadequacy and her hectic trek was the preventive cure from having to halt and perhaps be overcome by depression. Nothing is kept from you, even the supposedly platonic admire affairs she had with men and women.

Buy,Download, Or Stream American Experience – Eleanor Roosevelt! Click Here

Her relationship with FDR was provocative, but probably not all that recent. As the narrative unfolds, it reminds you in many ways of the relationship that must exist between Bill and Hillary Clinton. Certainly, if times had been different, Eleanor could also have served in Congress.

Eleanor Roosevelt was one of the bravest, most dedicated people the world has ever seen. Certain she made enemies, but being hated by the likes of bigoted segregationists and J. Edgar Hoover is a point of commendation. The most intelligent fact in the tapes is that Hoover hated her and her FBI file is one of the thickest on portray. But then, so is her report of achievement.

A very arresting biography. Through interviews with friends and family members and extensive excerpts of her acquire writings and quotes, the viewer will reach to know facts about Mrs. Roosevelt not known before. Scorned by her mother and betrayed by her father and husband, she was a grand woman nonetheless. Although rich in material things, she was very fragile emotionally. Watching this video will convince the viewer that Mrs. Roosevelt was this country’s most controversial and hardest-working First Lady.

Stagefright is simply keep a fun, scary movie to scrutinize! Although there is quite a bit of gore which is not really my style so you may want to cessation your eyes in parts if that turns you off. But what could be a better premise in a panic film than a group of actors being locked in a lifeless theatre for the night with a psychotic killer stalking them at every turn dressed in an owl suit. And then the lone, final girl must try and defeat the villain before she becomes his last victim. All the elements of the post-slasher era are here as this was made in 1987. You have the tainted thunderstorm, people making awful decisions, a variety of titillating deaths and even a sad cat crossing someone’s path. Aloof, this is definitely worth checking out if you devour these films. This was originally released on DVD by Anchor Bay and now is being distributed by Blue Underground. I wish one of these companies would release the 1980 terror gem Curtains next (although released in 1983) .

This is a substantial giallo/slasher hybrid movie! The murders were a itsy-bitsy tame though, they weren’t that brutal at all (in my view) You always glance that kind of stuff in slasher movies. The setting of the movie was gigantic! Overall gargantuan giallo/slasher hybrid movie, check it out!

I haven’t viewed the entire site but so far the photography and sound are quite profitable and, in fact, good in Chained For Life and Child Bride. Chained For Life deals with right Siamnese twin sisters who are unbelievable singers/entertainers (in trusty life, too) in vaudeville. One is courted and exploited by another entertainer in the explain grand to the chagrin of the other twin. What eventually occurs is somewhat far-fetched but unruffled possible. I won’t waste it but the twins are treated with dignity throughout the record which also features an steady very exciting variety/vaudeville display. Child Bride concerns the dignity and rights of young pre-teen and teenage girls and, as the title denotes, a very serious social say in the U.S.A. at one time. A teacher from the same mountain community (and in trouble) advocates for a law forbidding this practice. There are also other conflicts within the mountain community, some quite gruesome, but it’s an inspiring chronicle, especially the unexpected ending/solution.

Do not rob this movie yet. Magnolia butchered the subtitles and will be releasing a version with the theatrical subtitles in the reach future. Magnolia will not replace this disc with the fixed one, so beget off on your remove. You will know the fair version when you stare “subtitles: English (theatrical release) ” in the specs on the help.

I was very disappointed with this DVD. So mighty so that I’m returning my copy of it. I saw the movie in theatres, and found it masterful. The wonderful tone is allotment of the beauty of the film, and the subtitles on the US DVD release are a travesty. They choose most of the subtlety from the tone and characters (peruse http://iconsoffright.com/news/2009/03/let_the_wrong_subtitles_in_to.html for examples) . The movie I saw in theatres was a masterpiece; the movie on this DVD (using subtitles) is a mediocrity. If you are going to acquire this DVD, either download and utilize the theatrical subtitles or consume the mediocre dubbing track. As for me, I’m going to gaze for another region’s copy or wait for a re-release.

In the kill, this DVD is a masterclass on why top-notch subtitle translations are significant in foreign films.
